What is your volunteer role with the City of Gosnells?

Steve
I perform the role of Ben Mason in the City of Gosnells Ghost Walks program. Ben Mason was the initial instigator of the Mason and Bird Timber Company.

Hayley
I play the role of Mary Sheridan in the City of Gosnells Ghost Walks. Mary Sheridan was a resident of the City, a good humoured passionate woman whose love of a drink and poor choice in men lead to an early demise.

Why do you volunteer and what do you personally gain from volunteering?

Steve
I volunteer because I know that our society cannot function without volunteers. I understand this and want to make my contribution to support the community. I have to say that I enjoy the Ghost Walks immensely.

Hayley
It gives me an opportunity to be part of the community I grew up in. Being a ghost, especially the role I play, allows me to have a lot of fun interacting with the community showing them that the history of the place they live is far more interesting than they may have known. It's also a great opportunity to meet new and interesting people of all demographics.

What encouraged you to become a volunteer?

Steve
I've seen the benefits of contributing to the community and have found great value in doing this.

Hayley
I love two things, history and performing. When I was a kid, we used to make visits to the Wilkinson Homestead and I had very fond memories of the place, so I decided that I wanted to be part of that. From there it was suggested to me to give being a ghost a go, I loved it from the very beginning and have never looked back.

What advice would you give to anyone who is interested in volunteering?

Steve
Choose something that you will enjoy doing and recognise the value of what you are doing. Without your contribution society cannot function.

Hayley
Just do it! Sometimes it can be a little scary stepping out of your comfort zone and trying new things but the rewards for volunteering are tremendous.
