Young ‘inventors’ keep it in the family

The Jones brothers, of Gosnells, have shown that a good idea, a little effort and teamwork can lead to great things, like winning the 2020 Young Re-inventor of the Year competition.

Run by Switch your thinking, the competition encourages young people to come up with new ways to be more sustainable to benefit our environment.

This year’s theme was Future Food, designed to spark new ideas for how we grow, eat and dispose of food waste.

Ayman (12), Laith (10) and Haytham (9) won the Primary School (under Year 7) category for their indoor LED herb garden, which they made from an old fridge, with a little help from their dad Andrew.

Mayor David Goode said the judges were impressed with the boys’ idea to re-purpose household appliances to grow edible plants with energy efficient lighting.

“The three brothers have a great approach to sustainability and a great work ethic to produce not only the LED herb garden but they have been transforming other appliances such as dryers and washing machines to create edible and ornamental gardens,” he said.

“This is exactly what the Young Re-inventor of the Year competition is all about – giving young people a way to share their ideas and creativity for a more sustainable way of life.”

Ayman, Laith and Haytham plan to use their $1,000 sustainability prize to purchase three new bikes and they hope to continue re-inventing and even selling some of their creations to help fund tools and equipment.
