A $3.5 million upgrade at Mary Carroll Park in Gosnells is now complete, with the opening of the largest all-abilities playground in the City of Gosnells.
Following the opening of a pedestrian bridge and accessible public toilets including a Changing Places facility in 2023, the completion of the playground, picnic areas and yarning circle space brings the project to a close.
The upgrade was partly funded by a $1 million Lotterywest grant.
City of Gosnells Mayor Terresa Lynes welcomed community members to explore the new-look park with a free community celebration between 11am and 1pm on Saturday 22 March, featuring children’s activities and a coffee and ice cream truck.
“Mary Carroll Park is an internationally-renowned wetland and this major upgrade will allow community members of all abilities to enjoy this space to its fullest, connecting with nature and the area’s Noongar heritage,” she said.
“The upgrade was designed to provide opportunities for residents of all ages and abilities to learn about and access the unique environment at Mary Carroll Park, while ensuring it is protected for generations to come.
“The giant gilgie in the playground area is definitely a highlight and will capture the imagination of younger residents and those young at heart.”
Member for Thornlie Colleen Egan MLA said the upgrade would further enhance the stature of Mary Carroll Park.
“I am proud that the State Government, through a Lotterywest grant, contributed $1 million to this important project,” she said.
“Mary Carroll Park is a jewel in the south-eastern corridor that needs both protection and to be enjoyed by the whole community.
“It will now be not only a place of environmental learning, but also a place to learn about Noongar culture while having fun.”
Some of the most striking parts of the upgrade are bird-themed shade sails, which were custom designed by local Noongar artist Tamara Hayden, and six-season bridge balustrade panels, designed by fellow local Noongar artist Gertrina Hayden.
The upgrade also includes:
• Custom-made giant gilgie play structure, representing the native wildlife and important food source for Aboriginal people
• Six seasons spinners, which share information about Noongar seasons in a playful way
• Yarning circle and bush tucker and medicine garden
• Flying fox
• Picnic areas with shade shelters, barbecues and seating
• Exercise equipment tailored for seniors
• New paths, lighting and signage
• Accessible car park upgrades
