Cat registration, renewal and transfer

The Cat Act 2011 requires all cats from the age of six months, be sterilised, microchipped and registered. Cat registrations will apply from the date of registration until 31 October each year.

The maximum penalty for having an unregistered cat is $5,000.

Register your cat

Under the City’s Cat Local Law 2014(PDF, 971KB), from 12 October 2024 a person can only keep two registered cats at a premises.

Please note:

  • If you have more than two cats which are registered prior to 12 October 2024 you do not need to apply to keep your cats.
  • If you are claiming a pension concession, the City will ask you to provide proof of pension concession if we have no record of it already.
  • After you have submitted your application the City will contact you regarding payment of the registration fee.

Renew an existing cat registration

Before proceeding with the renewal, please have your Animal ID number before proceeding. The City will not be responsible for incorrectly entered information.
Your Animal ID can be found on the renewal notice provided to you by the City.

Update your cat registration details

If any details related to your cat's registration have changed, such as ownership, pension status, or sterilisation, you will need to update your records with the City. Keeping your registration details up to date ensures accurate records are maintained.
