Astley Street River Foreshore

The City  and the Armadale Gosnells Landcare group commenced revegetation of the degraded river foreshore and floodplain of Djarlgarra (the Canning River) in a joint project with the Western Australian Planning Commission near Astley Street, Gosnells, in 2001.

Initial stages of the project saw the construction of a sedimentation basin and lookout platform by a Green Corps team, with many hours of planting and weed control.

The project has continued , with more extensive planting of native trees and shrubs on higher portions of the floodplain.

In 2008, the further rehabilitation of the Astley Street site was facilitated  by the provision of significant funding by Main Raods WA as an offset for vegetation clearing through the extension of Tonkin Highway.

Over the life of the project, more than 20,000 native trees, shrubs and sedges have been established, and more than five hectares of former orange and olive orchard farming land rehabilitated.

The site now boasts floodplain forests and a scenic location for walking or just relaxing. The diversity of vegetation has resulted in a noticeable increase in bird numbers and protection of the previously exposed soil.
