The internet is a great tool that allows us to socialise, learn, work, play and to be entertained, however there are some risks to be aware of.
Developing good practices and following some useful strategies may prevent potential danger and can provide a safer and more positive experience when online.

Is your digital life protected?
The City of Gosnells has received funding through the Australian Government to deliver cyber security initiatives to vulnerable groups through the Act Now, Stay Secure campaign. The program is designed to help expand the national cyber security awareness and help the Australian community strengthen their cyber resilience, improve digital safety awareness, and build confidence in managing today's technology challenges.
The City is delivering the Act Now, Stay Secure campaign through a range of initiatives, including workshops, IT support services, and printed resources, providing multiple ways for the community to access cyber security information.
Funding support eligible for the below people groups:
- Culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) communities
- First nations communities
- Women
- Young people (up to 18 years of age)
- Elderly people (over 65 years of age)
- People with disabilities
- Local community organisations eg, local volunteer groups
- Not-for-profits
- People who are financially disadvantaged
How you can get involved - Workshops for community groups
No advanced technical knowledge is required for workshop participants.
Our interactive workshops topics cover:
- Cyber Security Fundamentals
- Identifying Phishing and Scam Attacks
- Installing updates regularly
- Creating strong password/passphrases
- Setting up Multi-Factor Authentication
- Data Privacy and Information Protection
Workshop Duration: Sessions 60 – 90 minutes

- Potential date/s for workshop – Note: While we endeavour to cater to your group needs, dates/times will depend on the presenter availability (Week days only)
- Estimate number of people attending the workshop.
IT Support Services
The City has partnered with 3 local businesses who are experienced IT professionals to provide 1:1 assistance with but not limited to:
- Virus check and optimisation
- Installing updates
- Setting up Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)
- Technical Troubleshooting
- Cyber Security Assessments
The City of Gosnells residents will be provided a service of up to $150 on their electronic device – Terms and Conditions apply.

NOTE: If you are a local business who provides IT support and would like to participate please contact safecity@gosnells.wa.gov.au for more information.
- Payment will be made direct from the City of Gosnells to IT company after services have been completed.
- Any costs exceeding $150 will be the responsibility of the resident. Any additional charges will be discussed and agreed upon between the resident and the IT service provider before any work is undertaken.
- Residents who book appointments directly with the IT company listed above and agree to have their personal information provided to the City of Gosnells for verification and reporting purposes.
- Residents who participate in the service agree to complete a short survey.
- $150 cannot be exchanged for cash.
- Offer is extended to one electronic device check per City of Gosnells resident.
Current Scams/ How to report Scams
The WAScamNet website provides useful information and reliable advice to assist you in knowing how to prevent becoming a victim of a scam. If you become a victim of a scam you can report to WAScamNet. You can also register your email address and receive alerts when the latest scams are reported in WA.
Online Safety information
The Australian Government Office of the eSafety Commissioner provides a range of online safety programs and resources. Resources are available for seniors, parents/carers and teachers. There is also information on Women’s Safety including resources for Family and Domestic Violence. This information is available to download in 12 different languages.
Online training courses can be a useful tool to build your online skills. eSafety - Be Connected offers free online courses where you can learn at your own pace. You can learn anything from how to access the internet, make video calls or set up your device.
ThinkUKnow Australia has partnered with the Australian Federal Police, Commonwealth Bank, Dadacom and Microsoft Australia. Together they have developed a guide to secure passwords, identity and privacy. ThinkUKnow encompasses the SEE, SAY, DO philosophy and provides resources and delivers presentations for parents/carers and students as well as teachers and it provides information on the technologies young people use, the challenges they may face, and importantly, how they can be overcome.
