Firebreak change to reduce bushfire risk

Landowners are being urged to prepare now, with the deadline for firebreaks to be in place bought forward to help reduce bushfire risk across the City of Gosnells.

Deputy Mayor Serena Williamson said owners of properties zoned General Rural, Rural and Rural Residential must ensure their firebreaks are installed and maintained by 31 October.

“Our changing climate means the bushfire season is starting earlier, so the City has brought the firebreak deadline forward by one month,” she said.

“Firebreaks are a critical part of keeping our community safe. They provide essential access for emergency services to fight fires, helping protect lives and property.

“Please don’t leave it until the last minute. Now is the time to plan ahead, book contractors or machinery if needed, and complete your firebreaks before demand increases closer to the deadline.”

Under the Annual Fire Hazard Reduction Notice, properties must either have mineral earth firebreaks installed or reduce all flammable matter to a maximum height of 10cm. Firebreaks must be 3 – 5 metres wide and provide a minimum vertical clearance of 4 metres.

City Rangers will be inspecting properties from mid-October to ensure compliance for the fire season.

In previous years, firebreaks were required to be in place by 30 November. The new October deadline is expected to become a permanent requirement.
