If you heard something amazing emanating from Southern River on the weekend, it was probably Anika Louise, who won the 2022 Gozzy Rock presents Underground Sounds music competition, hosted by the City of Gosnells.
Anika was among five finalists, including Ari-Lou, Sienna and Brandon, Wolfcoatboy and Skye Colcott, who competed in the City's annual ‘battle-of-the-bands’ style competition on Saturday 22 October.
The event also included a performance by special guests, instrumental psychedelic and progressive rock trio, Yomi Ship.
The annual Gozzy Rock competition, WA’s longest-running original music competition, was rebranded as Underground Sounds this year, to better reflect the broad range of musical styles performed by local young people. It also acts as a nod to the name of the recently renovated youth centre in Southern River where the final was hosted, The Underground.
Mayor Terresa Lynes said Anika Louise earned a $1,500 prize for her songwriting skills, compelling stage presence and excellent musicianship.
Skye Colcott won the $750 second prize, while Ari-Lou won the $500 third prize.
The competition also included the Mega Music Raw Talent Award, with Sienna and Brandon taking out the $350 prize voucher.
“Congratulations to everyone who entered this year's Underground Sounds competition, to our five finalists and especially to our four prize winners,” Mayor Lynes said.
“The quality of music produced and presented by young musicians in our community is incredible, and the City is proud to support these artists and provide opportunities for them to expand their skills and achieve their goals.”
This year's competition was judged by industry representatives Katherine John and Mal Osborne and singer of last year’s winning band Dining with Sinners, Mishel Rankin.
Young people keen to get their music fix before the next Underground Sounds competition should check out The Underground youth space at Amherst Village Community Centre in Southern River. It has a recording studio, drop-in activities and regular music programs.
