Six talented local acts have been announced as finalists in the Underground Sounds music competition for young people, presented by the City of Gosnells.
Judges have selected local rock band Magpie Senpai, original singer songwriter Ethan Grainger, soul-pop artist Navisha Shukla, alternative rockers The Embers, rock/punk band Cult of Humanity and instrumental jazz duo Rosegreen to compete for $5,000 in prizes.
The finalists will perform live at the Underground Sounds final, competing for a $3,000 first prize, $1200 second prize and $800 third prize as part of this year’s expanded competition.
Formerly known as Gozzy Rock, the annual competition is now in its 38th year and continues to attract a diverse array of young, up-and-coming music talent.
This year’s event has grown to include performers from the Cities of Armadale and Canning, the Town of Victoria Park and the Shire of Serpentine Jarrahdale.
City of Gosnells Mayor Terresa Lynes said WA’s longest running music competition had helped many young musicians take the next step in their careers.
“Underground Sounds is a wonderful platform for these energetic performers to showcase their talent,” Mayor Lynes said.
Winners will also receive the iconic Underground Sounds Golden Record when prizes are awarded in December.
Last year’s first prize went to singer-songwriter Ava Sharp, who took home $1,500 in prizes.
The Underground Sounds final will be staged at The Underground youth centre, 2 Holmes Street, Southern River, from 4pm to 9pm on Saturday 6 December.
Tickets are available from the City of Gosnells website.
