The City of Gosnells is targeting invasive fish at its reserves, with 90 non-native fish caught at Alexandria Boulevard Reserve in Canning Vale this month.

City of Gosnells Mayor Terresa Lynes said the program to eradicate non-native fish which had been inappropriately released was ongoing, and also included lakes at Forest Crescent Reserve and Cambridge Promenade Reserve.

“These invasive fish, including carp, goldfish, spangled perch and Murray River cod, are destructive in our local lakes, wetlands and rivers because they affect water quality and biodiversity,” she said.

“These introduced species stir up sediment and nutrients, reduce water quality, kill aquatic plants and contribute to algal blooms. They are also a serious threat to our native fish because the introduced species are often more aggressive, outcompete local species for food and space, and spread diseases.

“These fish have been illegally dumped into our local lakes. We are urging everyone to dispose of unwanted fish in safer ways, such as giving them to a pet shop or other fish owners, or advertising on social media.”

Diseased fish should be disposed of humanely, rather than risk spreading diseases.
