The local community missed an opportunity to commemorate NAIDOC Week with the cancellation of several events because of a COVID lockdown in July.

To acknowledge Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and cultures, the City will host a Flag Raising Ceremony on Monday 25 October at the Civic Centre in Gosnells.

Entertainment will feature members of the Madjitil Moorna choir, including Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander and non-Aboriginal performers.

The choir is well-known throughout WA for its blend of traditional Aboriginal and mainstream music, and local residents may recognise some of the performers, who were involved in Aboriginal dance workshops at Amherst Village Library earlier this year.

This free community event will include a light lunch incorporating some traditional foods. Registration is essential. Please email cogarts@gosnells.wa.gov.au or call 9397 3118 by Monday 18 October.

A collection of 46 original artworks by artists from the Langford Aboriginal Association will also be on display, as part of a special NAIDOC exhibition at the Civic Centre.

The exhibition is also free and will remain open during business hours, 8.30am to 5pm, from Tuesday 26 October to Wednesday 17 November.
