A contemporary still life in acrylic by Tammi De Rooy has won the $5,000 Overall Acquisitive Award in the 2022 City of Gosnells Community Art Exhibition and Awards, announced on Friday 20 May.

Mayor Terresa Lynes joined Deputy Mayor and Presiding Member of the City’s Public Art Committee Cr Adam Hort to announce the eight category winners and the overall winner at the exhibition launch and awards ceremony.

Visitors to the exhibition have until Sunday 29 May to cast their vote for the Primewest People’s Choice Award, which will be announced next week, after all votes are tallied.

Renowned arts advisor Janis Nedela, who provided expert advice on the entries to Public Arts Committee members Cr Hort, Cr Aaron Adams and Cr Emma Zhang, said the standard of entries for this year’s awards was exceptionally high.

Each category winner received $500 plus a certificate, and the high quality of entries in the Youth Award and Pastel, Pencil, Pen and Watercolour categories prompted the panel to present Highly Commended certificates in those categories.

Mayor Lynes said this year’s 226 entries showcased the outstanding talents of artists from the local community and further afield.

“Every year, the quality of the entries for these awards exceeds our expectations, and this year is no exception,” she said.

“This level of interest is confirmation that we, as a community, place great value on art, and it is a clear indication that the future of art in our City is bright.”

Mr Nedela said the overall winning piece, Stay A While, was “a technical, well balanced and intelligent work, with a muted palette used economically to create flow and optical movement through its beautiful and realistic composition”.

The winners of the following awards were announced on Friday night:

  • Oil – Martin Archer for Abdullah Residence
  • Acrylic – Andrea Berry for Fremantle Drinks @ Coast
  • Pastel, Pencil, Pen and Watercolour – Natalie de Rozario for Old Endings
