The City of Gosnells has abolished fees for hiring cat traps and will establish a temporary cat management facility at its existing pound, in response to community feedback.

Council has also called on the State Government to amend the Cat Act 2011 to require cats to be confined to their owner’s property.

Mayor Terresa Lynes said the introduction of a temporary cat management facility and abolishment of trap hire fees would allow residents to more easily relocate nuisance cats that stray on to their property.

“Our community has been very clear about wanting to be able to easily and safely deal with cats causing a nuisance, such as fighting or spraying,” she said.

“It is also important for the welfare of the cats themselves, because wandering cats are more likely to be injured, attacked or contract diseases. We strongly recommend pet owners keep their cats indoors or in an enclosed outdoor area at all times.”

In late 2022, the City consulted local residents in response to community concerns about the impact of cats on native wildlife and the potential for wandering cats to be harmed. More than 880 responses were received.

Though cat-trap hire fees have been abolished, a bond still applies to ensure the traps are returned quickly and in good condition for future use.

Cats can only be trapped on the private property of the person who hired the trap.

While the new temporary cat management facility is being established, any cats trapped should be taken to the Cat Management Facility at the City of South Perth.
