The City of Gosnells is seeking feedback from the local community about whether to introduce a multi-ward system for Council elections.

Mayor Terresa Lynes said the Council was keen to hear from the community about the options.

“The City has operated with a single ward system since 2009,” Mayor Lynes said.

“Under this system, residents and ratepayers can vote for any person who runs for Council, and approach any Councillor if they have an issue they would like addressed.

“If the City was split into a number of wards, residents and ratepayers would vote for candidates who have nominated to be elected to the ward in which the resident or ratepayer lives. This could make it easier for residents to know which Councillors to contact if they have an issue in their local area.

“However, if Council was to introduce multiple wards, all Councillors would still be required to represent the entire City and not just the ward from which they were elected.”
A detailed explanation of the options and a short survey are included on the City’s YourSay Gosnells website.

“All feedback received will be considered and a report will be prepared for consideration by Council,” Mayor Lynes said.

The consultation period is open for 12 weeks, until Friday 4 August, and feedback can be provided via yoursay.gosnells.wa.gov.au, by emailing Council@gosnells.wa.gov.au or in writing to the City at PO Box 662, Gosnells WA 6990.
