City renews commitment to sustainable energy

The City of Gosnells has renewed its commitment to the Western Australian Local Government Association’s (WALGA) Sustainable Energy Supply project, reinforcing efforts to reduce its carbon footprint.

Under a new three-year contract, 25 of the City’s highest energy consuming sites – representing 70 per cent of its total electricity usage – will be powered by renewable energy from Synergy’s GreenPower accredited sources.

This includes major facilities such as the Civic Centre and Mills Park Centre, both of which also offer electric vehicle fast-charging stations for public and fleet use.

The contract follows a successful three-year trial coordinated by WALGA, which involved nearly 50 local governments.

The trial delivered substantial environmental and financial benefits, including approximately $34.7 million in savings and the offsetting of around 120,000 tonnes of carbon emissions.

Mayor Terresa Lynes said the renewed partnership highlights the City’s ongoing commitment to its Sustainability Action Plan.

“The City is proud to continue working with WALGA and fellow local governments to reduce our environmental impact and build a more sustainable future,” Mayor Lynes said. “Since entering this agreement, 25 of the City’s biggest power-consuming sites are sourced from 100 per cent renewable energy.

“Through this agreement, our largest facilities are now powered by 100 percent renewable energy and we’re confident that the next phase will deliver even greater cost savings and carbon reductions.”
