The City of Gosnells will take part in a Western Australian initiative to source renewable energy from WA based wind farms.

At the Ordinary Council Meeting on 9 November, Council resolved to sign up to the WA Local Government Association’s Power Purchase Agreement for three years, commencing next April.

City of Gosnells Mayor Terresa Lynes said the agreement would result in 23 of the City’s highest energy-consuming sites, including the City’s Civic Centre and Leisure World, being powered entirely by renewable energy from next April.

“Powering these sites with renewable energy is expected to reduce the City’s greenhouse gas emissions by 24 per cent, or approximately 2,559 tonnes of carbon dioxide each year,” she said.

“This is equivalent to the emissions created by driving an average passenger vehicle 10.3 million kilometres.

“The City is proud to be part of this agreement, alongside other WA local governments, to secure a greener future for the City’s residents.”

The agreement is also likely to result in energy cost savings for the City, which are anticipated to increase in future agreements.

Renewable energy for the 23 City of Gosnells sites will be sourced from three WA wind farms at Albany, Emu Downs and Collgar.
