Refurbishment work has finished at the Amherst Village Community Centre in Southern River, providing the library and youth centre with better equipped spaces.

City of Gosnells Mayor Terresa Lynes said the 19-week refurbishment project involved enclosing underutilised outdoor courtyards.

“Increased demand for services and programs at the Amherst Village Community Centre meant we were close to capacity,” she said.

“With more space available, the library and youth centre can now hold more programs and offer more resources and services to the community.”

The $515,603 refurbishment project includes $215,786 from the Commonwealth Government’s Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Funding Program, with the City contributing the remaining $299,817.

To coincide with the completion of works at the community centre, the SoundLab youth centre has been renamed The Underground to better reflect the range of programs offered to local young people.

The youth centre will host the final of the Gozzy Rock presents Underground Sounds youth music competition in October.
