Keep It Secure – Don’t take a holiday from home security

The City of Gosnells is working with Gosnells District Neighbourhood Watch and WA Police to reduce crime in our city. If you are planning to go away over the holiday period see the holiday security tips below to help you increase your home security.

Is your home a visual deterrent for burglars?

Try not to advertise that you are away on holiday. Follow these simple steps to keep your home secure.

  • Lock up all entry points to your home and ensure any garden tools, ladders and equipment which may be used to gain entry into your home are locked away. Vehicles should also be properly secured.
  • Lock up when you leave – deadlock all doors, windows, garage doors, vehicles, side garden gates and garden shed.
  • Arrange for Australia Post to hold your mail or to be collected by a family member, friend or trusted neighbour or. Cancel newspapers or grocery deliveries.
  • Install exterior motion sensor lights to light up dark areas around your home at night.  Use automatic timing devices for lights, radios and televisions and turn down the ringing volume on your telephone.
  • Don’t leave house keys concealed inside or outside. Take your spare sets of house and vehicle keys with you or leave them with a family member, friend or a trusted neighbour.
  • Arrange for someone to mow your lawn, water your garden and take your bins out.
  • Keep an inventory of your valuables in a safe place to identify your property. Engrave all your valuables with your Driver’s Licence number or take photographs of items that cannot be engraved. Engravers and UV marking pens are available at the Neighbourhood Watch Resource Centre, Shop SP 68 Maddington Central Shopping Centre or City libraries.
  • Do not broadcast your holiday online – Exercise caution when you are posting your whereabouts on social media as social networking sites are a favourite research tool for the modern burglar. Keep your profile closed and allow only your friends to view your profile. Talk to your children about social media safety and explain the importance of being safe while sharing information online and why they should be extra vigilant during the holidays
  • Join your local Neighbourhood Watch – it’s free and they provide useful safety tips.
