Home security checklist

You can improve your home security.  Take these steps to ensure your home is protected:

  • Street number is clearly visible from the road
  • Letterbox secured with lock
  • Meter box secured with Western Power approved lock to protect power supply
  • Trees and shrubs are trimmed to eliminate hiding places - your property should be clearly visible from the street.
  • Remove loose objects from the yard so offenders can’t use them to break in
  • Ensure gates are locked
  • Movement sensors installed to front and side lighting
  • Are sensors/globes high enough to avoid easy reach?
  • Lock Garden sheds and workshops
  • Is the Garage/carport secure?
  • Are security screens fitted to doors and windows?
  • Do windows have key locks?
  • Are windows and doors locked even when you are home?
  • Can visitors be identified without opening the front door?
  • Are rubbish bins stored away out of sight?
  • Do you have an alarm?
  • Are valuables engraved or marked for identification?  Have serial numbers been recorded?
  • Are you a member of Neighbourhood Watch?
  • IS YOUR HOUSE A VISUAL DETERRENT FOR BURGLARS?

The City has produced a Home Burglary Prevention video. The Home Burglary Prevention video is a comprehensive crime prevention resource focusing on internal and external security measures in an easy to follow format. The video is funded by the Australian Government Department of Social Services and in partnership with Neighbourhood Watch.
