Preliminary works are underway for Stage 2 of the Spencer Road Improvement Project to continue the City of Gosnells $5 million upgrade of this busy road.

Gas relocation works have just been completed and relocation of power services and underground power installation will start soon, with completion due by December.

In early 2021, the City will begin road construction of the 850m section between Hume Road and Regal Drive in Thornlie to upgrade the road, install a median island and turning lanes to improve safety and ease congestion.

Mayor David Goode said extensive consultation with the community had shaped the planning and timing of this important project.

“Spencer Road is one of the City’s oldest and busiest roads but it has become a traffic ‘black spot’ with 44 crashes in five years, flooding during rainy periods and dangerous conditions with undivided lanes and numerous intersecting roads,” he said.

“The Stage 2 works will upgrade these intersections to make it safer for motorists travelling in both directions, with traffic islands and turning pockets for easier right and left turns to and from Spencer Road, as well as the creation of U-turn areas.

“It will involve a lengthy period of road works and we ask all road users to be mindful of work crews, be patient and slow down or take an alternate route if possible.”

The project, which is jointly funded by the City and the State Government’s Metropolitan Regional Road Group, will also include new street lighting for better visibility and security.

Mayor Goode said service roads on both sides of Spencer Road would remain and the City was working closely with the Public Transport Authority to modify the location of five bus stops and bring them to current standards.

“Once the road works are complete, landscaping will be carried out towards the end of the project, during the 2021/22 financial year.”Project updates will be provided online and via social media, however residents can visit www.yoursay.gosnells.wa.gov.au or call 9397 3000 for more details on the Spencer Road Improvement Project.
