The Atlas State takes out Gozzy Rock top prize

Published on Wednesday 8 May, 2019

With a combination of out-of-this-world saxophone solos, crazy guitar riffs and ambient synthesizers, The Atlas State took out first place in the Gozzy Rock 2019 competition on 27 April.

Six finalists battled it out in front of a packed audience at the Don Russell Performing Arts Centre, in Thornlie, for the top prize of a $1,500 music store voucher.

The seven-piece rock band Stamina, who burst onto the music scene just two months ago, were runners up, while powerhouse singer-songwriter Beth Margaret was in third place.

Expansive pop/punk duo ‘Til Home took out the new Mega Music Raw Talent Award.

The second and third placed acts received vouchers for $750 and $500 while the Raw Talent Award received a $300 Mega Music voucher.

Mayor Glenn Dewhurst said the judges were extremely impressed with the standard of this year’s finalists.

“There was such a talented and diverse range of musicians, and I have no doubt that we will continue to see them make their mark on Perth’s music scene,” he said.

“The new format requiring band members to be aged between 12 – 25 years meant many of the musicians were school aged, one as young as 13 years old, which is terrific to see.

“Through Gozzy Rock, the City of Gosnells has been supporting young musicians for over three decades, making it Western Australia’s longest-running music competition,” he said.
