An oil painting by Chris Goldberg stood out among a record field of entrants in this year’s Community Art Exhibition and Awards, winning the overall acquisitive award.

City of Gosnells Mayor Glenn Dewhurst said Ms Goldberg’s painting ‘Invisible’ brought attention to disadvantage in an urban environment.

“Congratulations to Ms Goldberg for her striking and bold piece, which was really exceptional among a large field of excellent artworks,” Mayor Dewhurst said.

“It is such a unique piece that it will add diversity and depth to the City’s art collection.

“To have received 285 entries in the Community Art Awards this year is just amazing, and demonstrates the value our community places on the arts.

“Art adds to our community’s vibrancy, it reflects our values and culture, and it generates debate and discussion, which is why the City of Gosnells Community Art Exhibition and Awards is always interesting to visit.”

Ms Goldberg has won $5000 for her painting, while ten other category winners also shared in the $10,000 prize pool.

Open to the public at the Agonis between Saturday 16 June and Sunday 24 June, this year’s exhibition will also feature live painting demonstrations and an artist’s talk.

2016 Primewest People’s Choice Award winner Jos Coufreur will demonstrate his work in the courtyard at the Agonis, on Friday 22 June. Then art consultant to the City’s Public Art Committee Janis Nedela will provide an insight into why this year’s prize winners were selected during the artist talk on Monday 25 June.

Mayor Dewhurst urged local residents to visit the exhibition and take advantage of the additional free events.

“This year’s additional events will give visitors a window into the world of the artist, and add even more life to the exhibition,” he said.

“Community members can also vote for their favourite artwork during the exhibition, to help decide the winner of the Primewest People’s Choice Award.”
