Cricket will be given a development boost in the City of Gosnells with yesterday’s opening of a new indoor training facility at Sutherlands Park in Huntingdale.

The $540,000 facility features four indoor cricket wickets, making it easier for cricketers of all ages to train locally, anytime of the year.

The facility was a joint project between the City of Gosnells, Gosnells Cricket Club, Cricket Australia, the WA Cricket Association (WACA) and State Government and means local players will no longer have to travel to similar venues in neighbouring regions.

At the opening, Mayor David Goode said the City was proud to play a role in giving players an opportunity to play year round to improve their skills.

“It’s exciting to know that local talent can be nurtured and developed in our own backyard and the City hopes this facility will encourage more young people to be involved in sport and club activities,” he said.

“While the local importance of this facility cannot be underestimated, this venue also has regional significance, being one of only a few of its kind.

The City of Gosnells and Gosnells Cricket Club each contributed $170,000 to the project, while Cricket Australia and the WACA funded $50,000 through the Australian Cricket Infrastructure Fund. The remaining $150,000 was funded through a State Government Local Projects Local Jobs grant.
