City of Gosnells Mayor Glenn Dewhurst is urging families to give mental health the same priority they would place on their physical health.

This week, he joined children at the City’s Leisure World for a Junior Yoga session, saying it was important for people of all ages to find ways to manage stress and yoga was a great option, particularly for kids.

Mayor Dewhurst has made no secret of his plan to bring mental health issues to the fore and is urging local families – parents, grandparents and carers of young people – to help lead the way and show that being ‘healthy’ is not just about exercise or what you eat.

“As adults, we tend to focus on our kids’ physical health but children too, need to know it’s OK to talk about and improve their mental health and learn techniques to do just that,” Mayor Dewhurst said.

Yoga is designed to build physical strength and flexibility, improve concentration and confidence and create mental awareness and a positive self-image.

Half-hour ‘Kids Yoga’ sessions are held Wednesdays at 3.45pm for children aged six to nine years and 45-minute sessions are held Wednesdays at 4.25pm for children aged 10 to 14 years.

Classes cost $10.50 each and multi-passes are available. To find out more, please visit the City’s website at www.gosnells.wa.gov.au or call 9397 3000.
