The City of Gosnells received a $1.1 million Australian Government grant for community infrastructure projects, as part of the COVID-19 recovery.
Ten projects were identified by the City to help boost the economy by creating work opportunities for local trades.
Mayor David Goode said some of these projects were now complete, including an extensive upgrade to the Thornlie Community Centre.
“Toilets and kitchens on both levels have been upgraded, and the City added to the project with a $55,000 ceiling replacement to ensure this facility could serve the community for many years to come,” he said.
“It’s so pleasing that this grant has been used for its intended purpose – to create as many work opportunities as possible for local trades such as landscaping, plumbing, electrical, painting and flooring.”
The newly-renovated Thornlie Community Centre is two levels, with the ground floor used for indoor sports and first floor more suited to community group activities.
It was funded as part of a $1.1 million grant provided to the City of Gosnells through the Commonwealth’s Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program.
In addition to the Thornlie Community Centre upgrade, the following projects have been completed:
- Landscaping upgrade at the Gosnells RSL Hall
- Resealing of timber floors at The Agonis in Gosnells
- Toilet upgrade at the Coops Avenue Facility in Thornlie
- Upgrades to the courtyards at Maddington and Langford community centres and Langford Aboriginal Association
- External painting of Addie Mills Centre and Thornlie Library
“Work at other facilities across the City, including Thornlie Library and skate park and Amherst Community Centre, is continuing,” Mayor Goode said.
Federal Member for Hasluck, Ken Wyatt looked forward to seeing the projects benefit the local economy and create jobs for Hasluck residents.
“It’s wonderful to see the investments of the Morrison Government supporting local jobs and community projects,” Mr Wyatt said.
“Local community facilities such as the Gosnells RSL Hall and Thornlie Community Centre provide residents with the ability to join together, building community spirit and a sense of belonging.
“I look forward to seeing these projects contribute to building a stronger local community in Hasluck.”
Federal Member for Burt Matt Keogh also welcomed the investment in the local community.
“I’m proud to have worked with the City of Gosnells to secure this funding to provide improvements to facilities that not only provided local economic stimulus, but will benefit our community for many years to come,” Mr Keogh said.
