Homes and gardens throughout the City of Gosnells are sharing in the festive spirit, with a record number of entries in this year’s Safe City Christmas Lights competition, sponsored by Examiner Newspapers.

Mayor David Goode presented the winners with their prizes and certificates at the City’s Christmas event, Jingle All the Way, at Centennial Pioneer Park last Saturday.

“We’ve celebrated the festive season with the Safe City Christmas Lights competition for the past two decades and each year our community members find new ways to light up their houses and gardens for all to enjoy,” Mayor Goode said.

“The competition has also become a great way for neighbours to get to know each other and improve our community’s sense of safety,” he said.

David and Janine Mayfield, of 72 Forest Crescent, Thornlie, won $500 for the Best Private Residence, with an impressive collection of lights and festive characters, as well as an eye-catching window display.

Three runners up in the Best Private Residence category were:

  • Elizabeth and Philip Clegg – 39 Westfield Street, Maddington
  • Lisa Tenbokkel – 143 Langford Avenue, Langford
  • Damian Cunnane – 13 Judges Court, Huntingdale

Residents in Consulate Court, Thornlie, who are fundraising for Cystic Fibrosis WA, have taken out the $1,000 prize for Best Decorated Street for their amazing light displays and collaborative effort to bring the community together.

Vanda Liga, of 7 Orchid Pass, Thornlie, secured the First Time Entry prize money for a unique display, capturing the imagination of the judges for its detailed, animated scenes.

Mayor Goode encouraged people viewing Christmas light displays to be mindful of neighbours and park courteously. Drivers should take care near the displays, and watch for pedestrians.

This year’s judges included photographer Aaron Van Rongen from Examiner Newspapers and Councillors Adam Hort and Dave Griffiths.
