Lucia Moniewski has won the top award at the City of Gosnells 2017 Community Art Exhibition and Awards, for her work ‘Fighting for Survival’.

Ms Moniewski was awarded $5,000 for her acrylic work, which will be acquired as part of the City’s art collection. The piece cleverly works in news articles about cockatoos to make a bold statement about their fight for survival.

City of Gosnells Deputy Mayor Julie Brown congratulated Ms Moniewski, who also won the Mosaics Award for her work ‘Girls in the Garden’.

“Lucia’s work stood out amongst a very diverse field, and she should be particularly proud of her achievement,” Cr Brown said.

“The quality and diversity of this year’s artworks has been very pleasing. With more than half of the 124 artists who submitted entries coming from the local area, this exhibition is a wonderful reflection of the talent in the City of Gosnells.”

Eleven other artists were recognised at the awards ceremony last Saturday night, 6 May. Winning artists received a $500 cash prize in each of the following categories: Oil Award; Acrylic Award; Watercolour Award; Pastel, Pencil and Pen Award; Digital Media Award; Mixed Media Award; Sculpture Award; The City in Focus Award; Local Artist Award; Youth Award (12 to 17 years); and the Primewest People’s Choice Award.
