ANTI GRAFFITI CAMPAIGN

GRAFFITI REMOVAL
9391 3222 (ALL HOURS)

The City of Gosnells Anti-Graffiti Campaign commenced in February 1999. The clean up initially concentrated on all tagged Council facilities, plus properties adjoining major roads. As part of the redevelopment of Langford, the whole of the suburb was cleaned up early in 1999. Graffiti was then removed from areas surrounding schools and shopping centres and other areas within the City.

The fences on a large number of parks and public access ways have been painted green as a preventative measure. People on Community Service Orders, not necessarily related to graffiti offences, did a lot of this work.

Now that graffiti has been removed throughout the city, the aim is to remove all new graffiti as soon as possible.

What Are We Doing?
Under the Safe City Initiative, Council has employed a full time team of 'Graffiti Technicians' to combat graffiti vandalism. This team has been methodically working its way through the various suburbs removing graffiti and its aim is to assist the community by removing graffiti from fences; buildings and walls that adjoin public open space such as footpaths, laneways, reserves and streets.

The campaign requires the assistance of the community to achieve its goal to rid our city of graffiti vandalism and will remove the graffiti as soon as possible after notification. To many residents graffiti is not only ugly and unsightly, but can be quite threatening, particularly if graffiti vandals trespass onto their property.

Together with the City of Gosnells Safe City Initiative YOU can help to minimise the effects of graffiti and make the City of Gosnells a Great Place.  Report graffiti to the City on:

9391 3222 (ALL HOURS)

You can also report graffiti to the City via email at council@gosnells.wa.gov.au (Please note the City’s email filter will block offensive material, so offensive text should be summarised rather than reporting the specific language used)

Police Reports
The campaign works directly with the Police to ensure a coordinated approach to identifying and prosecuting graffiti vandals.  All graffiti incidents on Council infrastructure is recorded and photographed and provided to police as evidence.

To support this process you are encouraged to report any graffiti offences on your property to Police on 131 444.

If you have any information regarding who may be vandalising your neighbourhood you should report this also to the Police, or you can remain anonymous by reporting it to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Why remove graffiti as soon as possible?

Evidence shows that the sooner graffiti is removed from an area the less likely it is to recur. This works best when all the graffiti has been removed from a targeted area.

If I leave the graffiti on my wall won't the vandals be satisfied and leave it alone?

There is overwhelming evidence to show that graffiti attracts graffiti and if it's not to your wall or fence then it will be on adjoining properties.

What will it cost me to have graffiti removed from my property?

There is no cost to owners of private residences as the program is a service provided by the City of Gosnells. Commercial properties are requested to supply paint or meet the cost of the materials needed to remove graffiti.  (Please note the City does not remove graffiti from private assets such as cars, trucks, boats etc)

What about graffiti on other structures such as railway stations and power poles?

The City does not remove graffiti from State government assets such as these.  Any graffiti on state government property can be reported on the Goodbye Graffiti website at http://www.goodbyegraffiti.wa.gov.au/.

What can I do to help?

You Can:

  • Report graffiti to the City where it is on Council property or your own property on:

9391 3222 (ALL HOURS)

Email: council@gosnells.wa.gov.au

  • Take pride in your property and remove graffiti as soon as possible after discovery.
  • If you are a member of a service club or the local Neighbourhood Watch group you could promote your neighbourhood as a graffiti free area.
  • Consider the possibility of graffiti attacks when building a new fence. High brick, timber and asbestos fencing are particularly vulnerable to graffiti. Consider a lower or more open style of fence and the planting of creepers or other plants such as bougainvillea along fence lines and walls that will deter graffiti.

Adopt a Bus Shelter

Removing graffiti as soon as possible can reduce repeat graffiti attacks as one of the aims of graffiti culture is having others see the tags.  Become part of the solution by joining the Adopt A Bus Shelter program.  This program relies on the involvement of volunteers who are passionate about reducing the visual effects of graffiti vandalism in their community and lessen the reward for the graffiti vandals.

If you would like to be involved in the program please contact Safe City on T: 9391 6022 or E: safecity@gosnells.wa.gov.au

Business Accord

As a local government we realise that dealing with graffiti is everyone’s responsibility and a partnership approach is needed to combat graffiti.  Graffiti affects everyone particularly business and tourism and has a negative impact on residents and visitors to the City of Gosnells.  The Business Accord aims to restrict the access to items that are used illegally and are contributing to the amount of graffiti in the City.  For example; large markers and spray paint cans. If you are a local business owner and would like to be part of the Business Accord please contact Safe City on T: 9391 6022 or E:
