Opened in September 2009 this library has been a hit with the local community; in the first 12 months the library was visited by more than 75,000 people. Amherst Village Library is housed in the Amherst Village Community Centre.

The library boasts an outdoor reading area. Come and enjoy the ambience - do some study, relax with the latest newspaper or just catch up with friends.

Amherst Village Library stocks books, magazines, DVDs, puppets, comics and much more. The Library offers various services and programs for adults, children and teens throughout the year. Free WiFi is available and two Wii gaming consoles can be played in the Library.

Art Nook

This cosy area at the Amherst Village Library exhibits works by local artists.

Children's Area

Kids will have a great time in the children's collection.

There are all sorts of items available for loan as well as many programs your child is welcome to attend.

E-Zone

This area includes free Internet and PC access for library members. Printing and photocopying  is also available for a small charge.

The E-zone also incorporates two Wii gaming consoles and lots of games to play within the library. Library members may book the Wii for an hour (conditions apply). Tournaments and contests are held throughout the year, details of the next session will be placed on the What’s on @ your library page.

A small room is available at the Knowledge Centre, Amherst Village Library  and Thornlie Library for community groups to meet, free of charge (conditions apply). If your group doesn't meet these conditions, the rooms may also be hired for a small charge.

Amherst Village Painter’s Circle

An open invitation to all artists in the local community.

The group aims to support and encourage others to explore hidden talents and share knowledge, while painting in the comfort of Amherst Village Library.

Every second Saturday from 10am to 1pm.

Artists are required to supply their own water-based/non-toxic materials.

Book Club at Amherst Village Library

Book Club at your library

Adults who love reading and like to chat about the latest book they’ve read will enjoy the monthly Book Club sessions held at each library. Books may be borrowed from the library, hired from the Book Club for $5 each, or members can supply their own. 

Sessions run on the third Tuesday of each month, 6.30pm - 7.30pm. If this time doesn't suit you, there are alternative sessions available at our other libraries.

Bookclub for children

Under the Children and Community Services Act, children under six must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian at all times. Children between six and 12 must be accompanied by an adult or older sibling (over 13).

Star readers book club (ages 8-12)

For children aged eight to 12 years who love reading and want to explore the library, share their love of reading with other children and find new inspiration with fun activities. 

Each session includes discussions about books and authors. Children will receive guidance and encouragement to explore new authors and genres and can also bring along their favourite books to discuss with other like-minded children.

Children can improve their literacy skills with puzzles and fun activities and feel free to fully embrace their love of literature.

The Star Readers Book Club meets at Amherst Village Library on the second Friday of every month.

English Conversation Classes at Amherst Village Library

English Conversation Classes are a free English ‘chat’ class for people wanting to improve their conversation skills. Sessions are guided by a qualified staff member. Although the format mainly caters for migrants, anyone is welcome to attend.

Sessions are run weekly during school terms on Thursdays, 1pm - 3pm. Contact Amherst Village Library for more information or to reserve a place.

Family Rhyme Time at Amherst Village Library

Family Rhyme Time (Ages 1 - 3 years)

The Family Rhyme Time Program uses rhymes, songs and stories to foster positive communication, enjoyable interaction and fun times between parents and children. Parents register to attend the program which runs during the school term to learn the pleasure and magic of storytelling, nursery rhymes, lullabies and songs which are shared at the group sessions with their baby or toddler.

Sessions are free, but registration is essential.

Sessions run weekly during school term only.

Session details will be provided upon registration. To register, please add your details to the online form below  and a Young People’s Services staff member will call you to confirm your registration. Book now, as sessions fill quickly!

Mahjong Club at Amherst Village Library

Whether you’re an experienced player, or have never played before, you’ll be welcome to join in the challenge of the Western classical style of Mah-jong.

Sessions run every Friday 12.30pm - 3.30pm. For more information contact the Amherst Village Library.

Bring in your latest knitting or crochet project and join in the fun.

Join this friendly group and get to know others with the same interests. Free help is available, but the main focus is on fun and socialising.

Sit and Knit is held every second Tuesday from 2.30pm to 4.30pm.

Bring your own needles, wool and half-finished projects to complete in company. Refreshments will be provided.
