Name change for Fraser Road North

Published on Monday 29 May, 2017

Residents and businesses in Fraser Road North in Canning Vale will have a new address after 1 July, following a State Government decision to rename the street to reduce confusion with nearby Fraser Road.

Fraser Road North, in the City of Gosnells, and Fraser Road, in the City of Canning, were once connected but are now separated by a residential subdivision. Despite the addition of “North” to the City of Gosnells road in 1979, the street names have caused confusion for residents, businesses and emergency services.

The former Minister for Lands made the decision to rename both sections of road before the State Government election last March.

City of Gosnells Mayor Olwen Searle said the City was providing support to Landgate in managing the name change.

“While the change in road name will cause short-term inconvenience for residents and businesses, it will reduce confusion in the long term,” Mayor Searle said.

“This is most important in the case of emergency services, including ambulances, police and fire brigades, responding to urgent calls for assistance where every second counts.”

Fraser Road North, in the City of Gosnells, will be renamed Boardman Road, and Fraser Road, in the City of Canning, will be renamed Candeloro Road. Street numbers will remain the same.

The name Boardman Road was selected from a list of pre-approved road names held by the City, and recognises Leslie Boardman (1889 – 1975). Mr Boardman was an Australian Olympian who won a gold medal for swimming (4 x 200m freestyle relay) at the 1912 Summer Olympic Games in Stockholm.

Candeloro Road recognises Guiseppe Candeloro. Mr Candeloro was a pioneer in the development of Riverton, who lobbied to get electricity and roads to the area. He cleared land at what is now the corner of Willeri Drive and Collins Road in Willetton and started a market garden.

Australia Post will provide mail redirection for affected residents and businesses for four months, to allow time for change of address with relevant contacts, family and friends.
